The State Cabinet will decide within a fortnight on constructing flyovers at the extremely congested Vyttila, Palarivattom and Kundanoor junctions in the city, Minister for Public Works V.K. Ebrahim Kunju said on Monday.
As for the Edappally flyover, the DMRC is expected to begin work within four months and complete it within 18 months, he said, following a PWD review meeting held here on Monday.
The four flyovers are crucial since traffic diversion from Edappally and other parts of Kochi metro rail’s alignment is expected to begin within a few days. The Circle Inspector of City Traffic Police, Edappally, T R Jayakumar said that barricades are being erected near Changampuzha Park, to cordon off the metro’s work site and to streamline vehicle flow.
The Palarivattom NH bypass junction is expected to bear the brunt of diversion as heavy vehicles are diverted from Edappally through the NH bypass.
The steps initiated by the PWD to redesign Edappally junction have temporarily decongested the junction, even though the agency did not make optimal use of the vacant land available at the bell mouths. All through the past years, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has not taken any measures to redesign the four congested junctions on the Edappally-Kundanoor stretch of the bypass.
“An additional lane can be created on the south-western side if the free-left turn is widened. For this, the State government must acquire a portion of the building that sells wooden frames, located at the bell mouth,” NHAI sources said. They blamed undue interference by political leaders for the sorry state of affairs all along the 16-km-long NH bypass.
Currently, the service road on the side is in a state of disuse because the building poses an obstacle on the bell mouth. There is also a demand that a few metres of traffic islands at the junction be chipped off for smooth flow of vehicles.
Similarly, unscientific planning and design of the Vyttila and Kundanoor Junctions have been hampering steady flow of vehicles. An NHAI official said that the State government must relocate the traffic watch tower at Kundanoor so that one more lane can be built there.
