Chief Whip P.C. George on Saturday said he was of the opinion that a support dam could be built in the area marked for a new dam in the wake of the protest raised by the Tamil Nadu government and the frequent tremors in the area posing a threat to the lives of people living in the downstream of the Mullaperiyar dam. It will provide water from the present dam to Tamil Nadu while protecting the people from the threat, he said.

Addressing a gathering at the venue of the Mullaperiyar agitation here, Mr George said Article 49 in the Constitution should be invoked to provide protection to the lives of the people. He said the Article enshrined in the Constitution provided protection to the lives of the people.

Mr. George said he did not understand the logic behind the objections raised by the Tamil Nadu government in constructing a new dam.

He criticised the Advocate-General for reportedly standing against the interests of the State. He said the AG should either resign or should be dismissed from service for his stand in the court.
