Bridge work halted after attack on workers

Work for the Pachalam overbridge was halted early on Monday morning after three migrant workers were attacked at the work site by youths agitating against the bridge.

Sources associated with the work said that the workers were beaten up using helmets. Prior to this, the agitators raised flags on the bridge pillars and took away a ladder used by workers to climb up a pillar. A few women agitators too were present. Policemen who were present at the work site could not prevent the attack. Workers are reluctant to work here due to agitations by vested interests over ‘non issues’. The bridge could have been completed by now but for the protests, the sources said.

Reacting to Monday’s attack on workers, City Police Commissioner K.G. James who presided over a meeting of bridge stakeholders in the evening, said that the police were willing to initiate steps to ensure smooth progress of the work.
