September 24, 2016 12:00 am | Updated November 01, 2016 08:38 pm IST - KOCHI:

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) in collaboration with other oil companies and the State government, would be setting up a state-of-the-art Skill Development Institute in Kottayam for which land would be provided by the State.

The State has earmarked eight acres at Ettumanoor for the project and select courses would be started in November 2016. Nettur Technical Training Foundation (NTTF) has been identified as the training partner for conducting the skill development training programme.

Addressing a press meet here after the golden jubilee celebration function of the BPCL Kochi Refinery, Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan, said that a framework agreement to this effect had been signed with the State.

He commended the State government’s initiative to go for Compressed Natural Gas and Liquefied Natural Gas, but said that the pipeline laying of the Petronet LNG Terminal from Kochi to Mangalore needs to be taken up progressively. It is a matter of technical issue on deciding the route of the pipeline.

Kerala should keep away the other polluting fuels and use the environmental-friendly fuel to preserve the environment and the natural bounty that it has, he said. It would be a matter of adding economic value to the State when the LNG pipeline was completed.

The country had surpassed Japan in energy consumption and taken up the number three spot in the world.

Against the expected growth of 6-8 per cent in the petroleum product consumption, there had been an 11 per cent growth in 2015-16 over 2014-15. In 2015-16, the country had consumed 183 million metric tonnes of fuel and was poised to touch 200 million tonnes in 2016-17. The growth trajectory showed that the country was headed to consume 500 milli on tonnes of fuel in 15 years.
