Bid to smuggle in gold foiled at Kochi airport

On Tuesday another passenger was arrested from the Cochin International Airport while attempting to smuggle in gold bars. The Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs had arrested two persons last week on similar charges.

Mohammed Sahin Parambath of Kannur arrived here by flight number EK 0530 on Tuesday at 9.30 a.m. and he was intercepted by the Customs at the arrival hall after they became suspicious about his movements. The suspect was about to exit along the green channel.

On body check, two gold bars were found concealed inside his socks.

The gold bars, weighing two kilograms, worth Rs.55.98 lakh in the open market, and UAE Dirhams 25,000, equivalent to Rs.3.75 lakh, were seized from the suspect.

Mohammed Sahin was arrested under section 101 of the Customs Act of 1962.

In another instance, the Customs seized 46 Samsung mobile phones worth Rs.7.4 lakh from a passenger who came from China via Colombo by flight number UL-165.

Three kilograms of gold bars worth Rs.82 lakh were seized from two passengers on July 11.
