Bakers’ Association Kerala (Bake), representing around 15,000 bakers in the State, has welcomed the public to visit baking facilities from September 1 as part of a campaign to instil confidence in the public and to ensure that bakeries follow the best practices and keep their production facilities healthy and hygienic.
President of the Association P. M. Shankaran told a press conference here on Monday that the month-long Susithwam Mahathwam campaign from August 1 will focus on cleanliness.
The campaign will be inaugurated in Kanhangad on July 31 by E. Chandrashekharan, MLA, as part of the district-level meet of the association.
Mr. Shankaran said Bake stepped its activities on cleanliness and pointed out how the association had taken the lead in dumping artificial colours from bakery products. The association will continue to create awareness among workers and owners of bakeries on the importance of following the steps prescribed by the new food safety regime.
At the same time, he expressed concern at the reports that spread fear among the public about food in commercially-run eateries, restaurants and bakeries.
The fear among the public has resulted in a slump in business and threatens to adversely affect exports. This, he said, will only help monopolies while local bakers stand to lose out.
The association called on the authorities concerned to provide sufficient training to officials who are incharge of implementing the new food safety regime.
