Autonomous colleges to offer redesigned curriculum next academic year

Employability, innovation, and research will be key concerns

Come June and the city’s autonomous colleges will offer a re-designed curriculum focusing on student attributes and ensuring their holistic development.

The Hindu has learnt that the colleges will go for an approximate 20 per cent change in the existing curriculum from the academic year 2015-16 for its undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The Board of Studies constituted in each autonomous college as per the guidelines prescribed for autonomous colleges have come up with a series of recommendations. It would be placed before the academic council for approval.

Stating that a common re-design strategy would be employed for all programmes, Prof. T.V. Francy, Principal of Ernakulam Maharaja’s College, said that the focus would be on enriching the curriculum to help the students improve their skills. Suggesting that the re-designed curriculum needs to be flexible, Dr. P.K. Abdul Azis, Chairman of the governing council of Maharaja’s, pointed out that the re-structured programmes should address the needs of the society besides having relevance to the regional and national developmental needs.

Employability, innovation and research are the key aspects that should be taken in to account while re-structuring an undergraduate or postgraduate programme, he said.

Explaining that the proposed changes would help the students imbibe new ideas and qualities, Sr. Vinitha, Principal of St. Teresa’s College, said that the lack of variety in the content in certain courses would be avoided while re-designing the programmes. Senior faculty members in the autonomous colleges confirmed that the shortcomings in the existing curriculum would be taken in to consideration while re-designing the courses.

The curriculum re-design is being done to ensure that students in autonomous colleges here would be able to migrate easily to the national and international streams of learning especially while pursuing their higher studies.
