Three members of the State Women’s Commission met Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday and demanded strict action against police officers responsible for protecting the accused in the case of assault on a woman traffic warden.
The commission members gave a letter to the Chief Minister demanding action against the officers who prepared the First Information Report and the report produced in court based on which the accused, Vinosh Varghese of Kaloor, was granted anticipatory bail.
“The woman said that the police had not considered her case in a proper manner and we agree. The police report was prepared in such a manner that the accused would get anticipatory bail easily.
The report hid his history of past crimes. The police did not arrest him and the court granted him anticipatory bail,” said K.C. Rosakkutty, Chairperson of the Women’s Commission.
The traffic warden had accused SI Surendran of the Town North police of trying to isolate her in the case. The police began investigating the case after the warden registered the complaint that the accused had verbally abused her and grabbed her by the shirt when she was on duty at Kathrikadavu on November 2.
He allegedly told her that he was related to a political leader. Police officials identified the accused the same day, but did not make any arrest. On Wednesday, the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court granted anticipatory bail to the accused, while directing him to surrender before the investigating officer.
The Women’s Commission took note of the matter following media reports and presented the case before the Chief Minister.
