The Special Investigation Team on Wednesday arrested Younus, one of the three main suspects for whom look-out notices had been issued in connection with the assault on T.J. Joseph, Professor of Malayalam at Newmans College, Thodupuzha.

Six assailants had chopped off the right palm of Professor Joseph on July 4, allegedly related to the controversy caused by a question paper set by him for internal examinations at the college.

The police got a call from Coimbatore early on Wednesday that someone resembling the photo of Younus in the look-out notice was moving towards Palakkad.

The suspect was intercepted at Palakkad around 4.30 a.m. and brought to Muvattupuzha and later to Aluva for interrogation.

He was produced before the Muvattupuzha Judicial First Class Magistrate in the evening and remanded in police custody for 10 days.

The look-out notice issued on July 8 also had details of Ali K.K. of Thodupuzha and Nassar of Kunjunnikkara, Aluva.

It is learnt that the investigators have got solid leads for the ongoing probe into the role of the Popular Front of India (PFI) in the incident. Younus is the Muvattupuzha divisional convener.

The police have also released sketches of four persons, prepared on the basis of descriptions given by those present at the site of the incident.
