The Student Police Cadet (SPC) project seems to have generated much interest among schools in the city, with four unaided schools also volunteering to take up the project.

Venkiteswara School, Thripunithura; Gujarati School, Mattanchery; St. George School, Poonithura and ACS English Medium High School, Kaloor, have agreed to start the project after meeting the expenses from their part.

The SPC is currently being implemented in government and aided schools, but the City Police had suggested that if private schools came up expressing willingness to meet the expenses, all technical assistance would be provided.

The SPC project has been mooted by the State government to form a force like NCC and NSS to instil civic sense and social commitment among students and to evolve a support force for the police.

A meeting of the district advisory board, chaired by Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner, held recently had selected Government Girls' High School, Ernakulam; St. Sebastian's High School, Thoppumpady; Edward Memorial Girls' High School, Fort Kochi; Vennala High School, Vennala; and Government Boys' Higher Secondary School, Thripunithura, for implementing the project in the first phase.

Selection of student cadets is going on, which is complete in some schools. School committees have already been formed in these schools. These committees will in turn select two platoons for 22 members each from among eighth standard and Plus One students.

Two teachers will also be selected from each school to the ranks of Community Police Officer and Additional Community Police Officer, with the honorary rank of sub-inspector.

The State-wide inauguration of the project has been rescheduled to be held on August 2.
