The district administration has decided to organise this year’s Independence Day celebrations at the St. Albert’s College ground, Kaloor.
A meeting chaired by District Collector P.I. Sheikh Pareed decided to shift the venue from Marine Drive, which usually hosts the Independence Day celebrations, in view of the Coir Board Expo to be held there.
Rehearsals of parades by various forces and schools will be held on August 10, 11, and 13. The district information office will organise a slew of programmes lasting till August 15 in association with the district administration, Education department, Kudumbasree Mission, Youth Welfare Board, and Nehru Yuva Kendra.
Quiz competition for high school students, patriotic song rendering contest for higher secondary students, Kudumbasree members and youth clubs, awareness campaign on blood and eye donation, medical camp, screening of film are some of the events planned. Winners will be awarded on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations.
Trophies
Celebrations will start from 8 a.m. Members of police, Excise, NCC, Scouts and Guides, Sea Cadet Corps, and Junior Red Cross will line up for the parade. Trophies will be given to parade participants. About eight band groups will also form part of the parade. Besides, a contest in band music and patriotic song rendering for children will also be held.
The Collector said that concessions in private buses will be allowed to students travelling for the rehearsals of the parade.
Regional Transport Officer has been asked to ensure this.
Additional District Magistrate B. Ramachandran has been asked to issue emergency fax message to the Education department asking to postpone the start of Onam exams from August 14 to 16. Efforts are on to shift the exam scheduled for August 14 to August 24 since no exam is scheduled for that day when schools will be closed for Onam holidays.
The district medical office will make full fledged medical arrangements on the day of the parade and rehearsal days.
