Hundreds of people participated in a human chain along the coastal areas in the district on Saturday. The formation of the chain was part of the State-wide programme to highlight the security of fishermen who venture out into the sea.
The participants, including fishermen and their family members and leaders of various political parties, took a pledge to strive for measures to ensure the safety of fishermen.
They also demanded withdrawal of the declaration of Arabian Sea as a high alert area by the International Maritime Organisation.
The human chain, formed at 5 p.m., extended from Chellanam to Munambam in the district. The leaders who participated in the programme at Goshree Junction, Vypin, included Hibi Eden, Dominic Presentation, Binoy Viswam, K.N.Ravindranath, and M.K.Sanu. Former minister S. Sarma participated in the programme at Munambam. Meetings were organised at various places across the district.
