The retreat of North East monsoon has brought copious rain to Kerala.
The North East Monsoon that set in over the country a week ago. Though the onset of the North East monsoon was delayed by four days, the skies are not holding-up. Normally, the second spell of monsoon sets in on October 20. The withdrawal of the South West Monsoon and the onset of the North East version of the rain were declared on September 24 this year.
Showers to continue
It is estimated that on an average, the North East monsoon accounts for 20 per cent of the annual rainfall in the State. The showers are likely to continue for a few more days before its weakening. The second spell of rain from the North East monsoon will begin after the lull period, says weathermen.
Southern districts of the State would be benefitting the most from the North East monsoon, said P.V. Joseph, former director of the India Meteorological Department.
The low pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal, which is moving to the Arabian Sea, is bringing rain to the State. Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts would get major share of the rain from the return spell of the monsoon leaving out Kannur and other parts of northern Kerala, he said.
Last year, the State received an excess of 66 per cent rain from North East monsoon, according to the estimation of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The actual rainfall the State received from the North East version of the rain last year was 825.7mm rain against the normal of 498.5mm. While Wayanad and Idukki districts received normal share of rain, all others received rain in surplus.
Rain mostly in evenings
During the North East monsoon, it will rain mostly during the evenings. The showers will be accompanied by thunder. Weathermen have predicted rain with thunderstorm during the next few days in the State.
For Kerala and Lakshadweep, the Thiruvananthapuram centre of the IMD has predicted “heavy rainfall exceeding 7cm at isolated places till the morning of November 2.”
