Majority of the roads in the district have become motorable with the authorities completing around 80 per cent of the repair works.
As many as three agencies including the Kochi Corporation, the Public Works Department and the Kerala State Construction Corporation were involved in the repair of the roads that were badly damaged. The PWD has estimated that 314 km of road was damaged in the city.
The Department has completed around 80 per cent of the repair works assigned to it including the roads in the city and its suburbs, said P.I. James, PWD executive engineer (roads). The repair of most of the internal roads was also completed. These roads were completely damaged in the monsoon showers. In Kochi corporation limit, the damage was limited to some spots including the areas near Boat Jetty, Naval Base, and some patches on the High Court road, he said.
Immediate patchworks were carried out in these sections. The department carried out tarring in these sections at strips of five to 10 metre length. The repair of some internal roads was caught up in the second spell of rain that the district received during the past few days. The department has lined up the materials required for implementing the work, said Mr. James.
The official said that the repair would outlive the next monsoon season.
The PWD has prepared the detailed estimate for the 13 city roads that are to be re-laid on five-year guarantee scheme. The estimate needs to be approved by the higher authorities after which the tendering process will begin. The department expects to tender the works in two months, he said.
Kochi corporation authorities said they have completed majority of the road repair works. The work of the Chittoor has also been completed. The corporation re-tarred the road from Valanjambalam to Kacheripady, said Soumini Jain, chairperson of the Works Standing Committee of the Kochi Corporation. The segment between Kacheripady and Vaduthala Railway gate was repaired by the Kerala State Construction Corporation as part of the preparatory works for the re-routing of vehicular traffic in connection with the demolishing of the Ernakulam North overbridge, she said.
The rain in the last few days has affected the work of some internal roads and byroads in the city. The works would be carried out in due course, Ms. Jain said.
