One more pregnant woman died in the Government Medical College hospital here late on Monday. This is the third such death in the State-run hospitals in the district headquarters in the last 10 days.

On Monday, Smitha, the wife of Sharath, a resident of Vadakal here, was pronounced dead after a Caesarian surgery earlier in the day. The death was announced only late in the evening and relatives quoted doctors saying that excessive bleeding had led to the death. The police have registered a case following the allegation by relatives that medical negligence was the cause.

Meanwhile, the baby boy delivered by Smitha is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of the hospital and is yet to be declared stable.

On November 28, two women had died due to pregnancy-related complications in the Medical College Hospital and at the Women and Child Hospital here. Both the deaths triggered controversies with

relatives alleging medical negligence and failure of the government to provide adequate infrastructure, including stretchers, to the hospitals. Enquiries into these deaths are still on.
