Admissions to the 15 NRI seats in the Cochin Medical College (CMC) for the new academic session have begun.
The admissions will be made through the management of the Cooperative Academy of Professional Education (CAPE) as the government is yet to take over the college.
Admissions will be made according to the process followed by self-financing colleges. This is because the quasi-government CAPE management, which comes under the Ministry for Cooperation, functions as a self-financing college.
Management quota
At institutions under government control, all 100 seats are filled by candidates who have made it to the merit list. However, CAPE admits 50 candidates from the rank list of the all-India medical entrance examination and 35 from the management quota.
The 15 NRI seats, according to the college prospectus, will be filled either through an examination test conducted by the college or by selecting candidates who appeared for the common entrance examination, but failed to secure admission on merit. The Medical Director, who receives applications for the NRI seats, told The Hindu , that the college had not yet decided on conducting an entrance examination for the NRI seats. District Collector P I. Sheikh Pareeth, who is expected to submit a report on the college to the government, told The Hindu that he was yet to receive the audited reports of the past two years.
Report by month-end
The report on the college is likely to be ready by month-end, he said.
The government had asked Mr. Pareeth to submit a report on the assets and liabilities of the medical college after the Cabinet decided to take over the medical college.
In a press meet on Wednesday, Medical Director Junaid Rahman said decisions on admissions were being taken by the Minister for Cooperation.
He said activities to develop the college had begun to meet the staff pattern recommended by the Medical Council of India and to set up super-specialty wings.
