“Admissions to the next academic session in the Cochin Medical College should be based on the merit list prepared by the Entrance Commissioner after the exam later this month”, said a group of activists in Kochi on Thursday. Activists led by former Supreme Court judge V. R. Krishna Iyer and writer M.K. Sanu also warned of public protest if the admissions are not processed based on merit. They welcomed the government’s decision to take over the college.
Now, the ratio of merits seats and the management seats at the college under the Cooperative Academy of Professional Education is 50:50. Of the 50 management seats, 15 seats are reserved for NRI’s, which does not take into account the rank list. The District Collector has been given three months to submit a report on the takeover process to the government
Cancer hospital
Justice Krishna Iyer called for an international-level Cancer treatment centre to be set up at the medical college. “The government should immediately start postgraduate courses in the 12-year-old medical college and this will also resolve the issue of lack of faculty, said Dr. N. K. Sanil, a Kochi-based Urologist.
The activists said the government should constitute an expert committee to prepare a master plan for the development of the medical college. They also suggested the names of the committee members, which included M. S. Valiathan, Dr. Balaraman Nair, Dr. Ramdas Pisarody, Dr. Nizaruddin and former District Collector Dr. M. Beena who, they said, can chair the committee.
