An action plan to deal with chemical disasters in Ernakulam district would be formulated shortly, said Kesav Mohan, director of the Institute of Land and Disaster Management.

He was speaking at a meeting of district officials and the heads of public sector industrial undertakings held at the conference hall of the district collectorate.

Constant training

Mr. Mohan emphasised the need for constant training and mock drills to avert disasters, considering the large number of industrial establishments and factories in the district.

Training would be imparted to members of factories and boilers, fire force, and police departments under the aegis of the Institute of Land and Disaster Management.

Special practical training would be given to employees of crucial public sector undertakings and industrial units in the district.

Awareness campaigns with the participation of the public will also be held.

The action plan for disaster mitigation would be formulated taking in to account the suggestions received at the levels of officials and institutions.

Mr. Mohan said that capabilities should be developed to face chemical disasters along with natural disasters.

Mr. Mohan examined the hi-tech equipment maintained at the disaster management section of the collectorate

Additional district magistrate E.K. Sujatha; Deputy Collector (disaster mitigation) P. Indiradevi; district information officer P. Vinod; assistant professors at the Institute of Land and Disaster Management Faisal T. Aliar and Amalraj participated in the meeting.
