ABC project to be strengthened

The district administration will strictly implement the animal birth control (ABC) programme to curb street dog menace in Ernakulam.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of local body chiefs and representatives presided by District Collector Mohammed Y. Safirulla here on Thursday.

It was decided that the village panchayats should take the initiative to conduct the programme, done in a decentralised fashion.

District panchayat would extend all infrastructure support to it, president Asha Sanil said.

Directions issued

The Collector issued instructions to the district animal husbandry unit to assist the 14 village panchayats and six municipalities in the district that are already equipped to carry out ABC.

The city corporation has its ABC centre located at Brahmapuram, where six veterinarians are guiding its conduct. Of the 10,000 strays estimated to be present in the corporation limits, some 2,000 have been sterilised so far. District panchayat secretary K.K. Abdul Rasheed informed that the district panchayat would bear the entire expenses of the programme.

Weekly data pertaining to the conduct of sterilisation should be given to the District Collector, the programme coordinator. Since strays loiter about and may move across panchayats, the success of the programme depends greatly on all panchayats implementing the ABC together, Mr. Safirulla said.
