GCDA to act against errant tenants

February 15, 2017 08:24 am | Updated 08:24 am IST - KOCHI:

The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) is set to crack the whip on tenants found operating in violation of rules at its shopping complex at Marine Drive.

The new governing committee led by Chairman C.N. Mohanan is set to embark on the campaign realising that many shop rooms had been illegally sub-let for a rent far higher than the original rent for which they were allotted to them.

“We have also found that a section of tenants had encroached on the public space in the shopping complex far in excess of the space allotted to them. Besides, waste, including dangerous e-waste was found dump inside the open space in the shopping complex.

Notices would be issued against those found guilty in both instances to make amends, failing which their licence would be cancelled and the space would be allotted to new parties,” Mr. Mohanan said.

The previous governing committee had allotted space to run a hotel facing the backwater on the fourth floor of the shopping complex.

The party concerned had shut all the air ducts as a result of which there was no vent for the odour, which spreads inside the complex. Provision had also been made for the lift for the hotel along the side of the Marine Drive walkway, which was unacceptable.

Another hotelier alongside the walkway was found attempting to destroy the trees that have been offering shade over the chairs placed by the GCDA for visitors.

“Action will be taken against all violations while wrong decisions taken in the past will he revisited,” Mr. Mohanan said.
