A vegetarian restaurant at the Ernakulam North railway station was closed down on Sunday after members of the Under-15 State football team were hospitalised after they complained of food poisoning.

According to railway officials, 16 students, who were part of the team, suffered from food poisoning allegedly after they bought parcels from the eatery. The team had reached the station around 8 p.m. on Saturday to travel to Kozhikode after a match here.

“The students bought food parcels from the restaurant and boarded the Kochuveli-Bikaner Express. They had their food on board and soon began to complain of vomiting sensation when the train left Shoranur. Nine students were admitted to Pattambi Taluk Hospital and another seven to Nila Hospital,” the officials said.

On an alert, the railways sealed and closed down the restaurant. The students were discharged by Sunday noon after their condition improved.

Railway health officials collected food samples from the restaurant and sent them for a laboratory examination.
