In one of the biggest hauls from the Cochin International Airport in the recent past, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials seized eight kilograms of gold valued at over Rs 2.25 crore from a passenger who arrived at the airport on Friday evening. Sainuddin Jamal, 30, a native of Panackal, Muvattupuzha, who flew in from Dubai by a Spice Jet flight at 6 p.m., was arrested in this connection. Eight bars, each weighing one kilogram, were found hidden in a secret cavity in his suitcase. DRI acted on a tip-off and nabbed the accused as he attempted to rush through the green channel.

Jamal reportedly went to Dubai two days ago and is suspected of having smuggled in gold several times in the past.
