Two students of a private school in Thoppumpady were admitted to Medical Trust Hospital here with fractures after they reportedly jumped down from the school’s first floor on Monday.

Thoppumpady Police said that school teachers asked the girl students aged 12 and 13 to bring their parents as they used to be frequently absent from their class.

The mother of one of the students had come to school to meet the teachers on Monday. While the mother was at school, the students jumped down, following which they were taken to the hospital by a police patrol team. No case has been registered.

Engineer held

An executive engineer of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) in Kakkanad was caught red-handed on Monday morning by a team of the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) while he was accepting bribe from a contractor. The arrested was identified as M. Rajavelu (50) hailing from Nagercoil in Tamil Nadu.

According to sources, Rajavelu had demanded Rs. 8,000 as bribe from a CPWD contractor for clearing pending bills.

The contractor, whose name has been withheld on account of anonymity, informed CBI. Later, as directed by CBI officers, the contractor handed over the currency notes which were treated with phenolphthalein powder to Rajavelu.

“Our officials reached the office after a short while and took him into custody. A case has been registered against the engineer under Prevention of Corruption Act (1988). Later Rajavelu’s palm was examined and it tested positive since he had touched the money,” a CBI official said.

Man killed in accident

A young man died after his bike rammed into a bus at Panayikulam on Monday morning. Binanipuram police identified the man as Shamier, 35 of Edamulam.
