The Navy on Friday carried out medical evacuation of two critically ill patients from the northern-most islands of the Lakshadweep and Minicoy archipelago.

A third patient, who was to be evacuated in the same manner, died at Minicoy.

A Naval spokesperson said the Southern Naval Command had received a request from the Lakshadweep and Minicoy Administration on Thursday evening for medical evacuation of two critically ill patients, a nine-month-old baby girl with a broken hand and a 70-year-old woman with a hipbone fracture, from Kiltan island.

The Navy, on Friday, launched an advanced light helicopter (ALH) from the naval air station Garuda in Kochi.

Rough weather

The helicopter braved rough and squally weather en route to Kiltan and evacuated the patients, along with the baby girl’s parents, to Agatti island. A Naval Dornier aircraft flew them down to Kochi and the patients were sent to Ernakulam General Hospital.

The helicopter was flown by Lieutenant Colonel Y.K. Ajit Singh, Lieutenant Commander S.S. Dash and R.K. Sharma POACM (D). The Dornier was flown by Commander V.V. Mani and Lieutenant R.C. Vishnu.
