Police in Mailardevpally arrested three persons in connection with the murder and rape of a 49-year-old woman last week.

According to the police, Fatima Begum of Rajendranagar was picked up by 21-year-old Mohammed Asif Khan on April 19 and the duo headed to an isolated spot near Vattepally near Falaknuma.

When two others — 20-year-old Abdul Arshad Khan and 42-year-old Qadeer Khan — spotted the woman going with the man, they followed them. They caught the duo in a compromising position and threatening to expose them, Arshad Khan forced himself on the woman. Angered by that , the woman threatened to raise a hue and cry, following which Asif Khan bludgeoned her with a boulder, killing her immediately.

The police produced the accused on Wednesday before the media. Mailardevpally Inspector P. Jagdeeshwar said the police did not have any technical clues in the case, but were able to crack it because a constable had incidentally gone to purchase a cooler near the spot of offence at the time the crime was committed.

“When we got a call the next day about a body of a woman being found, the needle of suspicion immediately turned towards the second and third accused. But they did not know who the killer was,” the official said. The police got a breakthrough three days after the incident when the prime suspect brought another woman to the spot. Our men were keeping an eye on the area and were immediately alerted by a local.

“Though we did not know it was the killer, we nabbed the man just to prevent another untoward incident at the same spot. When he was brought to the station, the two other accused recognised him,” Mr. Jagdeeshwar said.
