Police on Wednesday arrested a 24-year-old youth for the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl at Gorikothapalli village in Regonda mandal here.

Bhupalapalli DSP Ravi Kumar said Kanakam Shiva (24) confessed to the crime, saying it was revenge against the girl’s father Oorla Raju, whom he held responsible for his brother Kanakam Kumar’s suicide and his father Saraiah’s death a few years ago. When he spotted the girl in a procession on Sunday night, he took her to the village outskirts, raped and killed her.

The girl’s parents filed a missing case on Monday and that evening, her body was found with bite and scratch marks. Her clothes had been partially torn. The police registered a murder case. The police along with the dog squad and the clues team inspected the area. The family members named a few suspects and upon interrogation, the police arrested Kanakam Shiva.
