Mohammed Akram Khan (22) of Hafeezbabanagar on Tuesday filed a complaint at the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) seeking action against the police for allegedly torturing and insulting him in the name of investigation.
The youth was allegedly picked up by the Abids police on Saturday last and subjected to torture on the suspicion of being involved in a theft case at a shop in Jagadish market where he worked as a salesman.
Thieves reportedly made away with cash from Adinath mobiles in the early hours of April 4.
Mohammed Akram Khan had been working at the shop for the last four months.
Tortured
“I was taken to the police station where my legs and hands were tied after which I was beaten with rubber straps and punched,” claimed Akram. Apparently, the police had picked him following a complaint by shop owner Ranjit as he wore a T-shirt similar to the one worn by the thief who was caught on close circuit camera installed in the market.
The police had also carried out a massive search at his house but could not find anything, he claimed. “We are poor but not criminals or thieves,” says Rafathunnisa, mother of Akram Khan.
