The ongoing construction of the elevated metro rail project has reached a significant milestone on Sunday with the casting of 1,000 segments which form the viaduct between the two piers by the concessionaire, L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad, at the Uppal casting yard.
The precast segments would be joined together to form the viaduct or a flyover like structure accommodating two railway tracks (up and down lines). Normal distance between two metro rail pillars was 31 mtrs (101 feet) and 11 segments would cover this distance, said Hyderabad Metro Rail Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy.
Weighing about 35 tonnes each, the segment would have a deck width of 8.8 mtrs (29 feet) to facilitate simultaneous movement of two trains in opposite directions. With a requirement of about 330 segments per km, the first 1,000 segments would be sufficient for covering a distance of three kilometres.
Total requirement of the 72 km project is 28,000 segments and L&T has been casting 10 segments per day and the same would be doubled after establishing a second casting yard. Erection of the first span between two pillars at Uppal (near Genpact) has been completed with the 11 segments glued together, he said.
The launching girder would now move forward towards Uppal. Works were going on at Nagole-Mettuguda section (stage-one) and Miyapur-SR Nagar section (stage-2) with 244 pillars (152 in Nagole-Mettuguda section and 92 in Miyapur-SR Nagar section) and 387 pier foundations completed. Piers construction has also begun in the L. B. Nagar area (stage-5), he added.
