Nampally promises to be an interesting poll with four of the eight divisions within the Assembly constituency being reserved for women. It may be the same political parties battling over largely similar civic problems, but women candidates are targeting some very specific issues as well.
Liquor shops are a case in example. Some of the main roads leading to residential colonies in Asif Nagar have liquor stores that are proving inconvenient for families, especially women. Identifying this as a major local problem, the Praja Rajyam candidate for Asif Nagar, Rekha John says, “Women can't walk on these roads after it gets dark and people crowd the wine shops. The crowd blocks the roads most of the time ,” she says.
Lack of other civic amenities as well as inefficient maintenance seems to be the predominant problem in division after divisionOverflowing garbage and irregular drinking water supply are two of the biggest problems faced by residents of Chintal Basti, Mallepalli and other divisions. Condition of schools and their environs too has made it to the candidates' agendas. “It is hard to understand how children go to the school given the garbage that is strewn all around. The smell is unbearable,” says S. Kamala, the LSP candidate for Chintal Basti, while referring to a government school located behind the fish market in her division. There are eight divisions in the constituency – Asifnagar, Muradnagar, Mehdipatnam, Ahmednagar,Vijayanagar Colony, Chintal Basti, Mallepally and Red Hills. Interestingly, while the MIM bagged this Assembly seat, the second runner was the PR candidate followed by the Congress and BJP nominees in the Assembly poll.
