In a heart-rending incident, an unmarried woman was kept in chains in the house. She was allegedly served food only once in two days.
This incident took place in Vaninagar of Jagtial district headquarters and came to light when a people’s representative of the local body came to her rescue with the help of police.
As the victim, Chityala Geetha (24), had lost her father, she was staying with her three brothers. Sources said Geetha was forced to work as “bonded labourer” by her brothers and sisters-in-law in their house and not allowed to go out. However, the victim claimed that she had completed her graduation and was teaching in a private school when family members forced her to quit the job and work in the house.
Unable to put up with the torture, she escaped from the house on Wednesday. But, the family members caught hold of her and tied her with iron chains, it was said. Local corporator Guggilla Ramesh noticed this and informed the police, who rushed to the spot and rescued her.
However, the family members said Geetha was mentally unsound and they had spent a huge amount for her treatment. They claimed that they had tied her with chains as she was attacking locals.
Superintendent of Police Anantha Sharma also visited the house and interacted with the woman and her family members. Jagtial Inspector R Prakash said they had registered a case against Geetha’s brother and sister-in-law Narayana and Mamatha. Geetha was shifted to the government hospital.
