A woman and her seven-month-old child were charred to death under mysterious circumstances at their house in Manikeshwarnagar near Osmania University on Tuesday afternoon.

The police said that around 1 p.m. locals of the locality noticed smoke and fire from the house of Ramesh, a librarian.

Taking it to be a fire accident, a few youth of the locality entered the house by jumping over the gate as the gate was locked. On finding the main door bolted, the police with the assistance of the locals managed to break open the door to enter the house and found K. Sowmya and her daughter charred to death.

Relatives of Sowmya suspect foul play and charged Ramesh and in-laws with having a role in the incident.

Another daughter safe

Another daughter, three-year-old Gayatri, who was found doused in kerosene in an adjacent room, was brought out safely, Osmania University Inspector P. Ashok said.

Sowmya was married to Ramesh four years ago and they have two children.
