A 40-year-old woman attempted suicide in front of Hyderabad police commissionerate at Basheerbagh on Tuesday by consuming bathroom cleaning acid.

Veeramani of Vidyanagar in Nallakunta walked to Basheerbagh and gulped the acid after reaching the commissionerate even as different teams of policemen were on duty there in connection with the ongoing Assembly session. The police rushed to the spot and admitted her to Gandhi Hospital. Later, she was shifted to Care Hospital at Nampally.

“No note was found with her, but the woman and her family members alleged that the Musheerabad police failed to act on the dowry harassment complaint of her married daughter Laxmi Prasanna,” the Narayanaguda police said.

Police accuse police

They also accused the Chikkadpally police of lopsided attitude in probing a complaint lodged by her daughter’s in-laws.

The Chikkadpally ACP T. Chandrashekhar Reddy said a case under section 498-A was registered by the Musheerabad police in August last after Veeramani’s daughter Prasanna filed a complaint accusing her husband and in-laws of harassment. Three persons were arrested in that case. Charge-sheet was also filed in that case and the trial was pending.
