An elderly woman was killed when an electric pole collapsed and fell on her in Hasmathpet area of Old Bowenpally here on Monday.

Shaik Chotu Bee (73), working as an attender in St. Paul School, was returning from her lunch break when the electric pole fell on her.

She was walking along the road and failed to notice the pole being uprooted. Death was instant for her. According to power department officials, the concrete pole collapsed under the impact of a large tree, which got uprooted and fell on the power conductors strung to the pole.

Reasons for the tree falling were not clear, as there was neither rain nor strong wind.

The police registered a case under section 174 of Criminal Procedure Code, and were investigating the matter. Power supply to the surrounding areas was affected as the pole had to be replaced, and the conductors restrung, officials said.
