A 28-year-old woman committed suicide along with her nine-month-old son by setting herself ablaze in her house at SVN Colony in Hussaini Alam on Friday night.

Police said the victim, identified as M. Laxmi, went to the terrace along with her youngest son Goverdhan and took the drastic step using petrol.

On hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and poured water and shifted the duo to Osmania General Hospital (OGH) where doctors declared them brought dead.

The police claimed that she took the extreme step due to alleged harassment by her husband Rajendra Kumar, an autorickshaw driver. The couple have four children.

Consumes poison

In a separate incident, a woman ended her life by consuming poison in her house at Rajanarasimhanagar in Santoshnagar as she was unable to bear the alleged torture by her neighbour Waheed and his son Zahed for not returning the Rs.60,000 she had borrowed from them, the police said.

The victim has been identified as Shahanaz Begum.
