Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has announced his government’s intentions to mount pressure on the Centre for enhancement of the minimum support price (MSP) to agricultural produce by at least 25%.

The Chief Minister lamented that though the Telangana Legislature had forwarded a resolution passed in support of hike in the MSP to the Centre, there was no action so far from the Central government in this regard. The State government wanted the provision of minimum support price to be extended to all crops, including minor crops like millets.

Simultaneously, there was need to link Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) with agricultural operations so that agriculture labour got their due.

“Linking MNREGS with agriculture will ensure that farm labour will be paid half of their wages by the government and the remaining by the land owners,” he said.

Insurance scheme

The Chief Minister, who addressed a massive gathering at the launch of the first-of-its-kind investment support scheme for farmers, utilised the platform to inform the people about the spree of welfare schemes being launched for farmers.

One major initiative in this direction was the insurance coverage of ₹5 lakh to each farmer that would come into force from June 2 — State Formation Day.

The government was working out the modalities of the scheme and discussions were on with different companies for its effective implementation. “The family of any farmer who dies after June 2 will receive ₹5 lakh from insurance companies,” he said.

Strong support

The Chief Minister utilised the meeting to recollect his association with Karimnagar district which laid the foundation for the struggle for separate Statehood. “Every programme taken up from here has invariably succeeded and hence the launch of the investment support scheme from this district,” he said.

He recalled how the Seemandhra leaders ridiculed the capabilities and skills of people of Telangana and said the residents were proving their worth ever since the formation of the separate State as could be seen from the achievement of Durishetty Anudeep, a native of Karimnagar, who topped the civil services examination.

Beyond expectations

Those opposed to formation of Telangana were vehement in their claims that the State would be plunged into darkness and the TRS would not be able to provide effective governance. “We are the only State providing 24-hour supply to all sections and the State is ahead of all others in terms of parameters like revenues and capital investment,” he said.
