‘We are better prepared this summer’

Every summer, J. Syamala Rao finds himself busier. Not surprising, given that he is tasked with ensuring stable water supply in the city. In an interview to YUNUS Y. LASANIA , the Managing Director of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) explains the city’s present situation, and the Water Board’s future plans.

Where does the water supply stand this summer when compared to the last?

This year, we conserved water for summer and are hence able to supply 340 million gallons per day (MGD). We stored enough water last year when the monsoons were good. Last summer, the supply was a little lesser as rainfall was low the year before that.

What are the city’s reliable sources of water? And what future plans do you have to ensure the city has more such sources?

Phase I and II of the Krishna project, and also the Singur projects, are two reliable sources. The purpose of building the upcoming Krishna Phase-III and Godavari projects is to ensure stable water supply to Hyderabad.

Of the five sources of water supply, Osmansagar and Himayatsagar – which supply 40 MGD – are not reliable.

What is the demand for water tankers compared to last year?

This year the demand has slightly come down as we are able to deliver 340 MGD – unlike last year, when supply fell a little. We have about 700 tankers – which includes 120 that deliver to slums and places with bad network every day. Each tanker makes about six trips a day, and in summer it increases to eight.

What if the monsoon is not good this year? How will it affect water supply?

We will begin supplying more water from the Krishna Phase-3 project by June-end, so it would not be a problem. Also, the Godavari project will be completed by December. Both these sources will ensure steady water supply.

What are the Board’s future plans?

In the coming five years, the HMWSSB will spend Rs.18,000 crore for uninterrupted water supply. That includes spending on areas like Alwal, Malkajgiri, etc. where network connectivity is not good, and also other works like replacement of old lines.
