Two days of incessant rains led to the Hussainsagar Lake reaching its Full Tank Level (FTL) and forcing authorities on Friday to issue an advisory to residents in areas abutting the water body to be prepared for shifting. The lake had reached its FTL last year too.
Water level rose to the FTL of 513.41 metres today and the GHMC expressed apprehensions that any more heavy rainfall could result in inundation of colonies like Arundhatinagar, Ambedkarnagar, Arvindanagar, Ratnanagar, Shivanandnagar and Dattanagar. Areas of Domalguda, Ashoknagar and Himayatnagar too could be affected, the corporation cautioned.
The situation was also being monitored by the revenue officials and residents were alerted through public address system about the likelihood of being shifted to the nearby rehabilitation centres.
Commissioner M. T. Krishna Babu instructed Additional Commissioner (Planning) D. Ronald Rose, Zonal Commissioner (Central) K. Siva Parvathi, and Additional Commissioner (Urban Community Development) D. Jayaraj Kennedy, to monitor the situation and coordinate with local corporators and public representatives.
Elsewhere in the city, but for a few brief reprieves, drizzle continued through Thursday night and till Friday evening.
Normal life remained affected to a large extent and most educational institutions recorded low attendance of students.
Emergency calls
The GHMC Central Emergency Cell received scores of calls last night on water stagnation from different parts including Amberpet, Maithrivanam near Ameerpet, Abids and Tolichowki.
Reports of 13 trees falling during rain were received from Barkatpura, Yousufguda, S.R.Nagar, Filmnagar and Lakdi-ka-pul.
