May 07, 2014 01:10 am | Updated 01:10 am IST - HYDERABAD:

An apartment building watchman was detained on Tuesday by the police after stumbling upon evidence that he had allegedly strangled an old woman living in one of the flats to death to take away her gold jewellery at S.R. Nagar.

Gold ornaments weighing nearly 100 grams belonging to the victim G. Durgalamma were recovered from the watchman Sanyasi Rao, the police said. The 58-year-old woman working as municipal contract worker was living with her son Nooka Raju at Swarna Heights in Madhuranagar.

She left for work at 10.30 a.m. on Monday and returned home after two hours but was not to be seen afterwards. The woman’s body was found in the cellar of the apartment building on Tuesday morning.

During sustained interrogation, the watchman told the police that he killed the woman and collected the jewellery she wore when she was alone in the building.
