A waste composting machine, with a capacity to handle 50 kg of waste per day, was inaugurated on Monday at the Walmart India’s Best Price Modern Wholesale Store in the city.
It is the first store to become part of the company’s Bio-degradable Waste Management Project. The machine would be able to manage the bio-waste generated at the store. Similar facilities were to be installed at the all Best Price Stores gradually, a release said.
Mayor Bonthu Ram Mohan and Walmart India president and CEO Krish Iyer inaugurated the facility in the presence of GHMC Zonal Commissioner S. Srinivas Reddy and officials of GHMC and the company. The machine will curtail the store’s contribution to municipal solid waste, a release said.
“We recognise that disposal of solid waste is becoming a critical issue,” Mr. Iyer said, underscoring the need for all concerned to manage waste responsibly through proper disposal, recycling and reusing.
The waste composting machine, whose capacity is scalable, works on thermophilic micro-organisms process. The composter does not require human intervention and operates with a simple mechanism that breaks down the complex bio-degradable waste into simpler forms and converts them into compost within three-four days .The compost from the machine would be used for green area within the store facility, the release said.
Walmart India had also set goals in energy efficiency and on track to meet those, having retrofitted the lighting systems in all its stores with LED and photovoltaic (PV) solar panels for renewable energy.
