The waiting period for permanent driving licence tests is set to come down considerably in Hyderabad as the Transport Department commenced construction of two additional light motor vehicle and two motorcycle tracks at Bandlaguda.

Currently, the waiting period to book slots for driving licence is about 20 days and at times it is even more, in case applicants opt for the Uppal and Nagole tracks. With the addition of new tracks, the waiting period for booking the slots could come down to a week, authorities claimed.

Everyday, over 1,000 applicants take the test in the existing 20 testing tracks in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts. Of these, one track is meant for heavy motor vehicles, nine for four-wheelers and 10 for two-wheelers.

A majority of driving licence applicants from Malakpet, Khairtabad and Secunderabad opt for Uppal and Nagole tracks.

“Once the four tracks come into operation at Bandlaguda, the waiting period would come down to a week or even less as each track can accommodate over 50 applicants a day,” said Joint Transport Commissioner G. Panduranga Rao.

Offices to be shifted

Plans are afoot to shift the existing RTA office in Bahadurpura to Bandlaguda once the construction works related to the new tracks and buildings are completed. “The project is being taken up at a cost of Rs.1.79 crore. We are going to complete the works in another nine months,” he said.

Similarly, authorities are also planning to shift the Malakpet and Mehdipatnam offices to new buildings as the existing offices, which are being operated from rented premises, lack sufficient parking space and other amenities.

The Collector has allotted 2.31 acres of land at Bandlaguda to shift the Bahadurpura RTA office and identification of land is still on to shift the Malakpet and Mehdipatnam offices as well. The authorities have identified 1,200 square yards of land at Moosarambagh to shift the Malakpet RTA office.
