Looks of excitement mixed with a feeling of nostalgia was common among the onlookers as several vintage cars and motorbikes made their way through the Necklace Road on Wednesday morning.
The proud owners showcased their collections at the Lumbini Park and went for a drive on the Necklace road and back. While a few of those present had acquired an interest from a family member, others had picked it up as a hobby later in life.
“I am regular to such events and now have brought along my Vauxhall, an England made car of 1937 model,” says, Muqtar Hussain, who participated in the rally with two cars from his collection of 20.
“It is a thrill but also an expensive hobby. A lot of effort and money goes in maintaining it. At times I import spare parts from the United States,” chips in Ajay Kant Gir, owner of the Chevrolet Style-line Deluxe car of 1952 model.
They were participating in the ‘Vintage Car Rally’ organised by the Deccan Heritage Automobile Association as part of the ‘World Tourism Day’ celebrations.
Bikes, though only few in number, made quite an impressive show. There were the likes of MV Augusta from 1967, Ideal Jawa from 1969, Army BSA from 1920 and 1948 Norton 500 cc Nautan.
A Lambretta scooter from 1956 model was the cynosure of all eyes.
Based on the parameters of aesthetics, originality, mechanical and coach work, awards would be given to the owners at a function to mark the occasion of World Tourism Day said Kantilal Dande, Commissioner, Tourism after flagging off the rally.
Anirudh Vijay Kumar of Deccan Heritage Automobile Association said the event held on August 15 and January 26 has been attracting more and more people every year.
About 50 vintage vehicles were on display at the venue for the public.
