Former Rajya Sabha member V.Hanumantha Rao was whisked away by the police on Saturday after he staged a demonstration with his supporters at Rajiv Gandhi statue in Somajiguda protesting against the filing of case by the police for allegedly abusing a police Inspector on the Assembly premises two days ago.

The ‘high-handed’ behaviour of the former Congress MP drew criticism and the city police registered a case after Kamatipura Inspector P. Sudhakar, who was on duty in the Assembly on Thursday, had lodged a complaint against Mr. Rao for abusing him. The police whisked away the former MP for staging a dharna at the busy Somajiguda junction and shifted him to the Shahinayatgunj police station in the Old City along with a dozen of his followers.

As soon as the news of his preventive detention spread, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, TPCC working president Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, former ministers J. Geetha Reddy, D. K. Aruna and Danam Nagender besides former PCC chief Ponnala Lakshmaiah visited the MP at Shahinayatgunj police station.
