The State government should provide financial assistance and cash incentives to promote girls’ education at school and college level to carve out a bright future for them to uphold the true essence of Bathukamma, said Telangana Mass and Social Organisations’ Forum (T-MASS) steering committee member Tammineni Veerabhadram.

Mr. Veerabhadram, who is also the State secretary of CPI (M) and vice-president of Kula Vivaksha Vyatireka Porata Samithi (KVPS), lashed out at the State government for allegedly distributing sarees in connection with the Bathukamma festival in a farcical manner to suit its “own interests”.

He was speaking at a meeting held as part of Bathukamma celebrations organised by the T-MASS comprising a host of organisations representing weaker and marginalised sections, farmers, women, and toiling masses at Grain Market here on Wednesday.

Mr. Veerabhadram said the T-MASS was striving to uphold the cause of women and underprivileged sections of the society through a collective social action.

Referring to the reported caning of girl students at Banaras Hindu University in Uttar Pradesh three days ago, he alleged that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre was persecuting university students contrary to its oft-repeated slogan of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao .

T-MASS Forum district chairman Jwalitha, convenor P. Sudarshan Rao and others were present.
