UoH revokes admissions into three programmes

Entrance exams held, but there is lack of qualified faculty

The University of Hyderabad (UoH), one among the prestigious central universities of the country, had to cancel at least three programmes it had announced admissions into for the year 2017-18, due to lack of qualified faculty.

The university has notified the same and expressed regret on its official website, where it has announced the results of the entrance examinations conducted for admission into its post graduation, M.Phil, Ph.D., and other courses.

The programmes into which admissions have been cancelled include the Ph.D. (Indian Diaspora), Ph.D. (Human Rights) and M.Phil. (Indian Diaspora), for which entrance exam was conducted early this month.

A click on the results for these programmes opens into a notification by the university, which says that there are no eligible supervisors for the programmes, and hence, the university has decided not to admit anybody into them.

The notification cites the criteria mentioned in the University Grants Commission’s (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil/Ph.D. Degrees) Regulations, 2016, for allotment of supervisor to guide the M.Phil. and Ph.D. in terms of the number of students a faculty member can take at any point of time, and the eligibility of the supervisor.

There are no eligible supervisors to guide the students in the aforementioned courses that match the UGC criteria, hence the admissions have been cancelled.

However, a click by the student keen on knowing the regulations by UGC yields no information as the page is “under maintenance”.

Official sources from the University of Hyderabad have admitted that the three programmes have been revoked even after conducting the entrance examinations for the same in the first week of June.

The university had adopted the UGC regulations in March this year, when the Vice-Chancellor Podile Appa Rao had asked all heads of the departments and centres to take stock of the available eligible supervisors for all the programmes, an official said.

Based on the information provided by the departments/centres, it has been decided not to take admissions into the above courses. The information gathering could not be completed by the time the admission notifications were issued, hence the entrance exam was conducted, he informed.

The admission process would be completed by August 10, by when recruitment of fresh faculty would not be possible.

“The students should not suffer after six years, because their Ph.D. would be invalid if the UGC criteria is not met. We do not want that to happen,” he said.
