The Golconda police were faced with a bizarre occurrence of role reversal that put them on a sticky wicket on Sunday. A 55-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man arrived at the police station, seeking protection from their relatives who opposed their union.
“It was an unusual scene to witness. We often come across cases where we have to rescue a woman from marital distress following marriage to much older men,” said Golconda Inspector Syed Fayaz.
The man and the woman, according to the official, are neighbours in a Golconda neighbourhood. After the woman’s husband died a few months ago, the duo decided to tie the knot. However, their families opposed the move and warned them of dire consequences if they went ahead with marriage.
“The man’s family were belligerent in the police station. They threatened to hurt him. We have taken an undertaking from them to not cause any harm to anybody,” the official added.
Sensing that the relationship may not auger well for them, the police sought to counsel the duo against getting married, with assistance from a Muslim religious scholar. The duo had agreed to put off their wedding for now, the inspector said.
