Unseasonal rain lashed across several parts of the district during the wee hours of Saturday, damaging harvested chilli stocked in open fields in Kusumanchi, Tirumalayapalem, Thallada and a slew of other mandals.

The unexpected spell of rain drenched the harvested chilli, which was ready to be sent to the market, making it unusable.

Rainwater surrounded several huts at Jellacheruvu village.

The residents had a tough time pumping out the water as the huts were located in a low-lying area of the village, sources said.

Passengers of an air-conditioned Hyderabad-bound TSRTC bus had a miraculous escape when the bus rammed a DCM van on the Khammam-Suryapet highway at Palair, but no injuries were reported.

The incident occurred due to poor visibility owing to the drizzle in the early hours of the day. The front portion of the bus was damaged, sources added.
