The Karwan Assembly segment is always unpredictable. How the electorate here vote is difficult to guess. The speculation is intense every time the area goes to poll. It is no different this time. Arch rivals Majlis and BJP are crossing swords in five of the six GHMC divisions.
Over the years electoral fortunes of BJP and Majlis have been swinging here with both parties having strong pockets of influence. In the previous MCH council, BJP held only two divisions of Jiyaguda and Mahdipatnam while the Majlis represented the remaining six.
However, this time the entry of CPI (M) has queered the pitch for Majlis and BJP. Of late the left party is concentrating in this constituency and even contested the Assembly poll from here. The CPI (M) is contesting only two divisions of Guddimalkapur and Langar Houz but it can influence voters elsewhere too. The party is expected to cut into the votes of both BJP and Majlis. “We have been concentrating in these areas and we have good support”, says G. Vitthal, CPM secretary, Karwan constituency. There is multi –cornered contest in all the eight divisions here with Congress, TDP, BJP, Lok Satta and MIM in fray. The MBT is contesting the lone division of Langar Houz. The Majlis leadership, however, is confident of romping home from all the five divisions it is contesting as it is sure the non-Muslim votes would get divided to its benefit. Most of the divisions cry for attention. There is a woeful dearth of civic amenities with roads and sewerage taking the cake. Garbage litter, burst swerage lines and bad roads greet one everywhere. The widening of Puranapul- Langar Houz road is hanging fire. So is the construction of the Langar Houz flyover. The closure of the slaughter house at Jiaguda has rendered hundreds jobless.
