Underprivileged kids having a gala time

May 12, 2014 12:48 am | Updated 12:48 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Devoid of many comforts and luxuries of life, these underprivileged students are literally striking a high note in life during this summer vacation.

A step into one of the spacious halls of the Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Residential School (APSWRS) in Mahendra Hills is sure to amaze anyone witnessing, how these 190 odd students effortlessly sway and switch from classical to western to even folk.

Music classes

These students, who have been chosen from various schools from across the State, are part of a special summer music camp being organised by the Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare (APSW) educational institution society in association with Chennai-based music school Kalasree Academy.

“They have become professionals in just 10 days,” shared the proud music-trainer Aravind of Kalasree Academy.

“They are exceptionally talented students who also have a great grasping power. I am surprised that they can sing many songs without making any mistake.”

Camp duration

About 22 music teachers are participating in the camp which began on May 1 and will end on May 15.

“The classes have to end by 4 p.m., but the students are enjoying the camp so much that they continue to practise singing even till 5 p.m.,” informed M.E. Suhasini Paul, principal of the school.

“The idea behind starting the unique camp was to contribute to the overall development of the students and also keep them engaged during the holidays.”

The students are more than happy singing animatedly for hours together glancing once in a while from their diligently taken down music notes.

Soothing experience

“This is a soothing experience. Even after the camp ends, I will continue to practise the songs and will also teach my friends,” said M. Chanti, a student from Warangal district.

D. Raghavender, a class VII student from a Social Welfare School in Nellore district said,

“My interest in music has grown tremendously due to this camp. I want to become a singer too. I am also glad I joined the camp as I made many friends,” he said.
