Two construction workers were killed and other two sustained injuries when a truck fell into a pit dug up for laying metro rail piers at Chaderghat in the early hours of Thursday.

A total of eight workers were working in the pier pit minutes before the accident occurred and it was a lucky escape for six of the labourers, as they had just gone out to have water, the police said.

The accident took place around three in the morning when a speeding ready-mix concrete container coming from Malakpet rammed the barricades and fell into the pit. Two labourers – Mumtaz Ansari (22) and Babulal Yadav (19), both hailing from Jharkhand – were doing centring work in the pit when the truck fell on them, Chaderghat Sub Inspector K. Srikanth said. Both sustained serious injuries and died before they could be shifted to a hospital. Another labourer, Mangura, sustained injuries along with the truck driver. The vehicle was coming from Guntur and was heading towards a construction site in the city.

Two killed on ORR

In a bizarre incident on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) in Hayathnagar, two persons were killed in separate accidents, but involving the same vehicle on Wednesday night.

P. Suresh Babu (24), a DCM driver, sustained life-threatening injuries when the vehicle collided with a lorry. He died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Later, an ORR staffer Janga Reddy, who was removing the DCM from the accident spot, got killed when another lorry hit the vehicle.

Auto rams lorry

At Chevella, two persons were killed and three sustained injuries when the auto-rickshaw they were travelling in rammed a stationary truck at Damigida gate in Doma mandal on Wednesday night. The victims – Buddiah and Mogallapa, daily wagers of Jubilee Hills – were coming to the city along with three other persons after attending a wedding when the accident took place.
