Heeding to a suggestion from Blue Cross Society founder Akkineni Amala, GHMC Mayor Majid Hussain on Saturday directed officials to change the timings of catching street dogs for the Animal Birth Control programme.

The Mayor asked GHMC Additional Commissioner (Health and Sanitation) to shift dog-cat-ching activit-ies to late evenings or the early hours of the day as the animals were unlikely to be found during the day.

The instructions were issued during a review meeting of the ABC programme, which also saw Ms. Amala in attendance.

Mr. Hussain also ordered the purch-ase of small vehicles for dog catching squads. Instead of limiting themselves to addressing street dog menace, the GHMC’s veterinary wing could rope in services of dedicated NGOs, Mr. Hussain suggested.

He said the GHMC was planning to upgrade the South Zone veterinary hospital as a specialised ABC centre.
